Bakery Skills Programme
2020

The Women and Youth Empowerment Trusts’ main directive is to solve societal problems, pertaining to education and the employability, of women and youth that has historically been left out of the equation. Collaborating and engaging with the Trust, implies a value alignment as our partners see the benefit of making a difference in education and employability.

The Trust has worked alongside two strategic partners who has enabled the implementation of an accredited Bakery Skills programme, which has been recognised as a scarce and critical skill in South Africa. The Trust has collaborated with Omni HR Consulting on the recruitment and selection of our learners, who have subsequently been hosted at The Mooreesburger for the fulfilment of the learning and practical application component of their learning journey.

Learners

We have had the privilege of providing 8 learners (from Khayelitsha) with the opportunity to undergo training, which combined both theory and practical application in the onsite restaurant at Mooreesburger. Learners could practically apply their learning by working in a commercial kitchen and engaging with customers in the restaurant and therefore obtaining real, practical workplace experience to prepare them for the working world.   Learners furthermore stayed in learner accommodation for the duration of the Bakery Skills Programme, to ensure maximum benefit and focus on successful completion of the programme.

Master Baker

This group of learners had a great attitude towards the programme and showed a genuine interest in learning the skills of baking. They worked well as a team and with practice they have the potential to become excellent bakers.

Recruitment is based on the directive of the funder, aimed at communities that require upliftment. This programme allows youth, which previously would not have access to skills opportunities to now develop a skill that they can use.

The work integrated learning component places a focus on practical application in the bakery. Learners have an opportunity to continue their journey by seeking employment with the retail / hospitality environments or consider opening their own small business specialising in baked goods.
